At Couch Heroes, we’re exploring new ground for the MMO genre. In a world where fantasy and ancient technology intertwine, players explore shattered realms, grapple across verticality, solve puzzles, and push back corruption, with progression driven by player expression and discovery. We envision creating a bridge between the gamers of the 80s all the way to the gamers of today, creating a space where both coexist and journey together. We’re developing in Unreal Engine, in early production, with a team spanning multiple countries.
We’re remote-first, based in the UK, and scaling to support a multi-year live-service roadmap. We value autonomy, curiosity, and collaborative ownership, and we’re looking for creators who want to help build something from the ground up. Sound like your kind of thing? We should talk.
A persistent MMO needs build, deployment, and infrastructure systems that are reliable, fast, and scalable. As the team grows and the game moves through production toward live service, the cost of a broken build, a failed deployment, or an infrastructure outage compounds.
We need a Development Operations Engineer who can build and maintain the systems that keep development running and prepare the infrastructure for live operations. You will report to the CTO and work closely with gameplay engineering, backend services, QA, and production. You will own build pipelines, deployment automation, infrastructure provisioning, and the operational tooling that the entire development team depends on.
We are in early production. Build systems, CI/CD pipelines, server infrastructure, and monitoring are being established. You will be building these systems with both development velocity and live-service reliability in mind.
Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines for the game client, server builds, web services, and tools. Ensure builds are fast, reliable, and automated.
Manage Unreal Engine build pipelines: client packaging, server builds, content cooking, and asset validation. Optimise build times as the project grows.
Implement automated testing integration: unit tests, integration tests, and smoke tests as part of the build pipeline.
Manage source control workflows and branching strategies that support multiple teams working concurrently.
Support the development team with tooling, automation, and infrastructure needs. Be responsive to build failures and infrastructure issues that block development.
Collaborate with backend engineers on deployment strategies, database management, and service orchestration.
Work with QA to maintain stable test environments and support automated testing infrastructure.
Document infrastructure architecture, deployment procedures, and operational runbooks.
Provision and manage cloud infrastructure for development, staging, and production environments using Azure, AWS, or equivalent platforms.
Build infrastructure-as-code using Terraform, Ansible, or equivalent tools. Ensure environments are reproducible and version-controlled.
Design and implement monitoring, alerting, and logging systems that give the team visibility into build health, server performance, and infrastructure status.
Plan and build the infrastructure architecture for game server deployment: dedicated server hosting, auto-scaling, regional deployment, and failover.
4+ years of experience in DevOps, infrastructure engineering, or build engineering, with at least one shipped game or live-service product.
Strong experience with CI/CD pipeline design and maintenance using Jenkins, Azure Pipelines, GitHub Actions, or equivalent.
Experience with cloud infrastructure provisioning and management on Azure, AWS, or GCP.
Proficiency with containerisation and orchestration: Docker and Kubernetes.
Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools: Terraform, Ansible, or equivalent.
Scripting proficiency in Python, Bash, or PowerShell for automation.
Strong communication skills and a service-oriented approach to supporting development teams.
Deep understanding of Perforce and Git.
Experience with Unreal Engine build pipelines and content cooking workflows.
Experience managing game server infrastructure: dedicated servers, matchmaking infrastructure, and regional deployment.
Experience with monitoring and observability stacks: Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, or Datadog.
Familiarity with database administration and backup strategies for game state persistence.
Experience with cost optimisation for cloud infrastructure.
You build systems that other people depend on, and you take that responsibility seriously.
You automate by default. If a process is manual and repeatable, you build a tool for it.
You are comfortable working through ambiguity. Building infrastructure for a game in early production means planning for a future that is still being defined.
You are responsive when things break and thoughtful about preventing the next outage.
You work autonomously in a remote environment, proactively keeping your lead and collaborators informed.
